Our vision at Kingborough Community Care is to provide practical food support in a welcoming and respectful environment where people are treated with dignity and care. No one should have to face food insecurity alone. KCC is a space where guests can pause, have a hot drink, enjoy a snack, complete a shop and connect with others.

Our Story

Kingborough Community Care began in 2012, the same year Foodbank was established in Tasmania. When Ann Kingsbury, a member of Kingborough Family Church, heard about Foodbank’s launch, she saw an opportunity to serve the local community. With just four volunteers, KCC began distributing food to six families in need.

Through word of mouth the program quickly grew. The “Extras Shop” was later established when Foodbank offered a wider range of products for distribution.  Later on an Op Shop was added, offering quality affordable clothing, books and household items.

During the coronavirus pandemic, need for food services dramatically increased. A team of dedicated volunteers would pack hampers each week, and deliver them to guests as they drove through in their cars, rain, hail or shine! With up to 115 individuals and families being supported each week it was the busiest season in the life of Community Care so far.

Today, KCC has over 50 dedicated volunteers serving an average of 60 guests each week. Each week we have new Guests register, many being referred by family, friends and other local support agencies.

What we do

Kingborough Community Care provides a weekly food relief service and Op Shop from Kingborough Family Church, Huntingfield on Thursdays. Doors open from 11:30am -1:15pm. Anyone who holds a concession card or is newly arrived in Australia and needs food support is welcome as regularly as needed.

For a donation of $20 a substantial supply of pantry staples can be acquired, including bread, milk, pasta, rice, canned goods, fresh seasonal vegetables, as well as frozen vegetables and meat.

The “Extras Shop” provides a wider range of grocery and personal care items – even pet food.

A small Op Shop holds a range of quality clothing and household items that guests can purchase. Prices start at 50c per item for child’s clothing and $1.00 for adult clothing. We often have sale days where a bag of clothing can be purchased starting from $5.00. Our friendly volunteers in the Op Shop love the take the time to chat with guests in this relaxed environment.

The Play Nook is a dedicated space for children to experience a range of play and craft activities and their parents/carers to connect with other parents.
Parents stay with their children while in the Play Nook but are welcome to bring in a cuppa and snack to enjoy while playing with their children.  The Play Nook is open during school terms.

New Guests to Kingborough Community Care are asked to bring their concession card with them for their first visit and will have an interview on arrival. After an interview one of our volunteers will explain the “shopping” process and provide an orientation of our service. Those without a concession card but genuinely requiring assistance are also welcome and will receive support. Emergency hampers are also available for a $20 donation during the week for those who need support outside of our Thursday service. Contact the church office if you need this assistance.

You will find us at 11 Glory Place, Huntingfield. There is plenty of parking onsite and our premises are fully accessible.

During 2025 there were:

3432  trolleys of food provided

1033 individual people supported

An average of 59 families supported per week

52 Registered volunteers
